The family had 3 young children and had recently finished their house renovation. There was an existing stone terrace which was far too hot as the aspect was south facing and the steps into the garden were disproportionately narrow.
We changed the configuration of the terrace by making the step up into the garden much wider and therefore more inviting. We planted some umbrella trained Mulberries for extra shade in the height of summer, and took up some paving from the terrace to grow herbs. We removed trees from the lawn, to allow more light into the garden, and created larger beds for planting, and an area for vegetables.
We also created a hardwood deck half-way down the garden around a beautiful mature magnolia with stepped poles for the children to climb on to reach their play area. An oak swing was commissioned with a simple nursery rhyme carved around it.
The garden now works as an entertaining area for the adults and the young children and their many friends.
