This garden was completely overgrown when we first saw it – the clients were having the house renovated with a dugout basement.
The family had 2 young boys and a new puppy, loved growing plants and wanted to grow their own vegetables and herbs.
It was a challenge to create a design that gave both boys space to play as well as room for a coldframe, some raised vegetable beds, a lawn and 2 seating areas.
New storage was created with a custom made shed built immediately adjacent to the house and therefore out of sight from inside. The garden walls were weather-boarded and painted and mirrors were incorporated to give depth to the garden.
We used a palette of pale pastel colours for the planting, with the herbs rosemary, sage, fennel and mint.
For the children we also planted an espaliered apple and a fig tree- so that the boys could watch the fruit develop, and in a year or so be able to eat the produce.
